STERLING, Va. -- Hail and wind were the hallmarks of a line of storms that swept through the area on Monday.

News4 meteorologist Veronica Johnson reported that hail was reported in several places, from Smithsburg in the north to Sumerduck in the south. Wind damage was reported in Crownsville, Bowie and Hughesville.

A severe thunderstorm warning for north central Frederick County and northeastern Washington County in Maryland expired early Monday evening. At 7:25 p.m., radar had indicated a severe thunderstorm near Wolfsville and moving northeast at 34 mph. Affected locations include Thurmont and Emmitsburg.

Hail to the size of pennies and wind gusts to 60 mph can be expected in the warned area. People should stay indoors and away from windows until the storm has passed.

A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect until 10 p.m. for D.C.; Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's, Washington, Allegany and St. Mary's counties in Maryland, and Albemarle, Arlington, Clarke, Culpeper, Fairfax, Fauquier, Greene, King George, Loudoun, Madison, Nelson, Orange, Page, Prince William, Rappahannock, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Frederick, Shenandoah, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham and Warren counties in Virginia.

A handful of storms threatening hail to the size of pennies and wind gusts up to 60 mph led to several severe thunderstorm warnings in Maryland and Virginia Monday afternoon and evening. Those warning have expired or been canceled.
