Tom Sherwood

Tom Sherwood is a reporter for News4 specializing in politics and the D.C. government.

Tom joined News4 in 1989 after spending 15 years covering local and national politics for The Washington Post. His interest in journalism started during his college years at Georgia State University. He worked at the college radio station and had a full-time job with The Atlanta Constitution, where he returned to work after serving in the U.S. Navy Reserves for six years.

During his years of reporting on the D.C. government, Tom has covered all four of the city's mayors, the career and arrest of former mayor Marion Barry, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, baseball's return to the region, and countless other politicians and events.

Tom is often called upon to share his knowledge of D.C. issues. He is a frequent contributor to WAMU radio and to other local radio programs. He also writes a weekly column called Tom Sherwood's Notebook for The Current newspapers and nbc4.com.

In 2005, Tom was the only local television reporter to be named one of the Top 50 Journalists in Washington by Washingtonian magazine. The magazine said Tom is "a local reporter with solid sources and unique insight into the sausage-making that is the District government."

In 1994, Tom co-authored Dream City -- Race, Power and the Decline of Washington, D.C. The book chronicles the history of how the U.S. Congress has treated the District of Columbia and recounts the rise and fall of former mayor Marion Barry.

Tom is a native of Atlanta. He currently resides in Washington's Tenleytown neighborhood and has one son, Peyton.
