Police Investigate Shootings In Northeast

3 People Injured

POSTED: 6:50 pm EDT August 7, 2006
UPDATED: 7:31 pm EDT August 8, 2006

Police are investigating a shooting incident that left three people injured Monday evening in northeast Washington.

Authorities said gunfire erupted just after 6 p.m. in the 1200 block of Fifth Street Northeast. Investigators said the shooting occurred shortly after a dance for teens let out at the Market Lounge, which is a club above the D.C. Farmer's Market in the 1300 block.

About 200 people attended the dance, News4's Megan McGrath reported. Shortly after 6 p.m., a fight broke out and the young people spilled out onto the street.

That's when someone pulled a gun and started shooting.

"I guess they fired about 15-20 rounds," one witness said.

Officials said three 15-year-olds were injured. A female suffered gunshot wounds to the legs. A male was shot in the hand. Another male was pistol-whipped. All of the teenagers were taken to a local hospital. Police said their injuries were not life-threatening.

Two teens were arrested for fighting. One had a gun. Investigators said a 17-year-old was arrested Monday night after authorities recovered a shotgun in the teen's car. They said they are not sure whether the gun or the teen was related to the shooting, but at least one other person who fired the shots is still on the loose.

The dance was scheduled to end early enough so teens could get home before the new 10 p.m. curfew.

A manager for the club said the event was aimed at getting kids off the street and bringing them together. The manager also said that security for the event was tight and the dance usually takes place every other week from 2-7 p.m. Police were notified that the dance was taking place, according to the manager, and some police were also there shortly before the shooting took place.

Police said they were never informed the dance was taking place. They also said it is important for places to notify them of such events with the crime emergency being in place.

"I think that what would have been different is if we had more police presence there, that if people are bringing guns and people are adamant about using guns that it just means we would have had a better chance to apprehending, possibly arresting and preventing [this event]," said Assistant Chief Brian Jordan of the D.C. police department.

Police believe the shooting may stem from an ongoing dispute between two groups of young people.

Violent Night In District

The shootings on Fifth Street were just the beginning of a night of violence in the District.

Another shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. in the 300 block of 61st Street NE. An adult male was shot. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Just after midnight, another shooting was reported in the 5200 block of Just Street NE. A male suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A fourth shooting incident occurred at 3 a.m. in the 4600 block of Livingston Road SE. An adult male suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body. The victim was transported to an area hospital in serious condition.
