GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- A CSX freight train struck a garbage truck Friday morning in Gaithersburg. The driver of the truck told News4 that the truck stalled on the tracks at Chestnut Street near Summit Avenue -- just west of the MARC station -- at about 5:30 a.m. He said he was trying to get it started again when the warning gates came down and he realized a train was coming down the tracks. He jumped from the truck and ran. Slideshow: Images From Scene
The train destroyed the truck, sending debris and trash flying all over the area. The truck flipped over and part of the body of the truck was ripped off its wheels. No injuries were reported, but there is a lot of cleaning up to do. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Capt. Oscar Garcia said a small amount of fuel has been leaking from the truck, so emergency crews are working to pump out the fuel before they clear more debris.Railroad tracks in both directions were blocked for about an hour, but service has been restored.MARC's Brunswick Line ran more than 60 minutes late, but all MARC tickets were honored on Metro's Red Line.Stay with News4 and nbc4.com for more information.
