Proposed D.C. Homeless Shelter Faces Opposition

Religious Group Plans 200-Man Shelter

A proposed homeless shelter for 200 men on Georgia Avenue is facing a new legal challenge.

D.C. Council member Jim Graham said he is asking the city's zoning commission to block the shelter.

Some residents said a big homeless shelter doesn't fit into the revitalization on Georiga Avenue.

A religious group's plan to put a 200-man homeless shelter is drawing fierce opposition.

D.C. Council member Jim Graham announced his plan file a zoning change to block the shelter move from its current 14th Street location.

"A massive homeless facility -- 60,000 square feet -- and at 7 a.m the residents of that shelter will be locked out of the shelter to go, who knows where."

David Treadwell runs the 14th Street shelter. He said he will sell it for $7 million if he can build his new facility on Georgia Avenue.

"We believe our programs have a long record of success. We've been in business for 122 years. We do not have enough room here," said David Treadwell, Central Union Mission Ex. Director

Residents said they are worried if the move will bring a return of crime and street trouble.

"Things are happening on our block, but it it’s a slow process and we feel that if the homeless shelter was to come on the 3500 block of Georgia Avenue -- it would just bring us back to where we were," said Petworth neighborhood resident Janisha Richardson.

Ellen McCarthy, the city's chief planner, acknowledged the shelter doesn't fit plans for Georgia Avenue near the Petworth metro stop, but she stopped short of supporting a zoning change right now.

"I can't imagine that that would be positive force for the vision that we talked about on Georgia Avenue," said McCarthy.

The Central Union Mission said it's aware of the opposition, and knows it may wind up staying at their current location.
