ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Kids playing soccer at a Montgomery County middle school stumbled upon a snake Friday morning, and it isn't the only snake to visit area schools recently.Ben Morey, a teacher at Redland Middle School, said his students thought it was pretty cool. Morey is talking about doing a snake search before every gym class.Children were playing soccer in a school field during physical education class Friday morning when the garter snake bit a boy's shoe. Morey called building service to get the snake, which was not venomous. The snakebite did not penetrate the boy's skin.
School officials said it appears the snakes are coming around more because of the dry, hot weather. At Cedar Grove Elementary School in Germantown, there have been two non-poisonous snakes captured this school year. The principal said one was found in the building, the other outside near the portable classrooms. The principal said pesticides will be sprayed around the school Saturday to get rid of crickets, the food source for the snakes.Residents who live near the school said snakes are not uncommon in the neighborhood.
