WASHINGTON -- The battle for Terri Schiavo led to an emotional debate that divided Democrats in Congress.
Virtually all Republicans and half of the Democrats present voted for the bill to let Terri Schiavo's parents ask a federal judge to prolong Schiavo's life by reinserting her feeding tube.Maryland Democratic Rep. Albert Wynn, who voted for the bill, said it was an emotional and draining debate.Virginia Democrat Jim Moran voted against the bill, saying it's a matter for state law rather than federal government intervention.Virginia had a case strikingly similar to the Schiavo case. A 1996 car crash left Louisville anchorman Hugh Finn on a feeding tube in a Manassas nursing home. His wife won the right to remove the feeding tube. Finn's brother, John, and his parents fought to keep Finn alive.John Finn said it took his brother nine days to die of dehydration. What made it even more difficult is that two days after his tube was removed, Hugh Finn sat up and asked, "Where's my radio?" The family was told that was a reflexive action and not evidence that he had brain activity, but the family wishes Hugh Finn had been given more time.
