Mercury Spilled At D.C. Middle School

Authorities: Broken Thermometer Led To Spill

UPDATED: 10:59 pm EST March 7, 2005

D.C. firefighters responded to Hardy Middle School in Georgetown Monday after a broken thermometer apparently led to a mercury spill.

Emergency crews were called to the scene just before 6 p.m. D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter said the substance was found at the school at 1819 35th St. N.W.

Etter said seven students and two adults were in a science classroom at the time of the spill.

Officials said the incident was smaller than several recent mercury spills at Cardozo High School. But cleaning up the hazardous substance has proven time-consuming.
