BETHESDA, Md. -- The worker trapped in a parking garage collapse has been found dead.Montgomery Fire spokesman Pete Piringer said the victim was discovered on the fourth floor of the garage being built at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. The fifth floor collapsed onto him.
Piringer said things had looked bleak for some time, since rescuers hadn't had any communication with the man despite trying different ways to get through. Rescue workers used high-tech listening devices and dogs to find the man.Piringer said the collapse happened about 9 a.m. on the campus in Bethesda, Md. The fifth floor of the structure pancaked onto the fourth floor, trapping the victim.A dozen or more workers were trapped, and were either escorted out by firefighters or plucked to safety by a cherry picker. While the collapse remains under investigation, NIH said one of the concrete beams that forms the garage deck apparently slipped and fell. The Montgomery County Fire Department's Urban Search and Rescue Team assisted with the search.Construction on the garage began last December, and it was due to be completed in February or March.
