WASHINGTON -- Starting today, frequent flyers who use Reagan National Airport can enroll in a new program designed to speed them through security.
It's called the Registered Passenger Pilot Program, and American Airlines will begin enrolling people later this morning. To qualify, passengers will have to use American Airlines and fly out of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport at least once a week.
Passengers will be asked to provide biometric information like digital fingerprints and retinal scans to Transportation Security Administration officials. In return, the TSA will do an extensive background check and compare their names to terrorism watch lists.Once the traveler is approved, they will be allowed to use special screening lines. American will also offer the program to passengers who fly out of Boston's Logan Airport as well.Northwest, United and Continental airlines are offering the same program to people who fly out of Minneapolis, Los Angeles and Houston.TSA officials say they're expecting about 2,000 frequent travelers to participate in this pilot program. They said it should be up and running by mid-September.
