Sniper Attacks: One Year Later
Memorial To Sniper Victims Unveiled
A candlelight vigil was held in Rockville, Md., Tuesday night to remember those who died and those who were injured in last year's sniper attacks.
A tree was planted in honor of all the victims in the courtyard of the Montgomery County office complex. It's the beginning of a more extensive memorial that will open in a year.
All of the family members arrived together, a show of solidarity and support for one another. Tragedy brought them together and they now share an unusual bond.
"My heart goes out to all of the victims and their families," Conrad Johnson's wife Denise said. "We're bonded forever."
It began one year ago today, October 2, 2002. A bullet was fired into the window of a Michaels Craft Store in Aspen Hill, Md. No one was hurt in that attack. However, 44 minutes later, a man walking in the parking lot of Shopper's Food Warehouse in Wheaton, Md., was shot and killed by a single bullet.
The following day, Oct. 3, 2002, the snipers killed 5 victims beginning with James Sonny Buchanan at 7:41 a.m. Less than an hour later, cabdriver Prenkumar Walekar was gunned down while he pumped gas. The next victim was Sarah Ramos, and then Lori Rivers.
The shootings continued at random until 9:20 that night when Pascal Charlot was gunned down on Georgia Avenue in the D.C.
On Oct. 4, a 43-year-old woman was shot as she loaded packages in front of a Michaels Craft store. She survived that attack.
Then on Oct. 7, a child was picked as a victim. A 13-year-old boy was shot as he walked into school. He survived his attack.
On Oct. 9, Dean Meyers was killed at a Sunoco station in Manassas, Va. Oct. 11, Kenneth Bridges was killed in Fredericksburg, Va., and three days later, Linda Franklin was killed at the Home Depot store in Falls Church, Va.
Oct. 19, a 37-year-old man survived after being shot outside a Ponderosa Steak House restaurant in Ahsland, Va.
Finally, on Oct. 22, the snipers claimed their final victim. Conrad Johnson, a Montgomery County Ride-On bus driver was killed while standing on the steps of his bus.
The shooting spree came to and end on Oct. 24, when John Allen Mohammad and Lee Boyd Malvo were arrested at a rest stop outside of Frederick, Md., and charged in the shootings.
Mohammad is scheduled to go on trial later this month, and Malvo's trial is slated for November.
