Tonight is the first time that rookies and former college teammates Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Patrick Queen will meet in an NFL game on opposite sides of the field.
Drafted four picks apart in the first round, they played together at LSU and helped lead the Tigers to an undefeated season and a national championship this past winter.
Edwards-Helaire and Queen were 2 of 14 LSU players drafted this year, including top pick Joe Burrow. Queen will see him on Oct. 11 when the Ravens host the Cincinnati Bengals. Fourteen draftees ties the previous record for most by any school set by Ohio State in 2004. LSU also tied Ohio State for most players selected in the first three rounds with 10.
Now yes, the focus of this much-anticipated Ravens/Kansas City Chiefs matchup on Monday night is on the QBs as it should be. Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes are two of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the league and the past two MVPs. But both Queen and Edwards-Helaire are also rising stars who will be fun to watch for a long time.
After two NFL games, both rookies lead their team in important respective categories. Queen leads the Ravens in tackles with 17 and Edwards-Helaire leads the Chiefs with 176 rushing yards.
They are used to going up against one another in practice, not as opponents, but they better get used to it. The Ravens and Chiefs could have many battles in the years to come - and this might not even be their final game this season. There's always the playoffs, too.
