LEESBURG, Va. -- Officers investigating the death of a man whose body was found more than seven years ago have made a major break in the case.
On Monday, police arrested a woman who is accused of receiving the dead man's Social Security payments.
The man's body was found in May 1996 near an access point to the Appalachian Trail. The body was stuffed inside two duffle bags, and placed in a large storage trunk.
An autopsy revealed the man was sedated and strangled. He also had fresh cuts and abrasions on his body.
However, officers were not able to identify him until January 2003 when they searched military records. They determined the victim was Jack Watkins (pictured, left) of Maryland.
Officers then determined Nancy Jean Siegel, 55, of Baltimore, used Watkins' identity to obtain a line of credit. Investigators believe Siegel also diverted Watkins' Social Security payments and payments from his retirement annuity to her own accounts.
Siegel (pictured, right) was charged with bank fraud, mail and wire fraud and theft from a government program.
Police said they have not yet identified any murder suspects in Watkins' death.
