CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. -- The Fourth of July marks one month since a tornado with 85 mph winds struck Chesapeake Beach, Md.The bayside community is getting ready for fireworks and celebration, but for some residents, there is still a lot of work to be done.A tornado touched down in Calvert County, near Chesapeake Beach on June 4, ripping roofs and siding off of buildings.
Construction crews hauling siding and shingles are still trying to repair the damage. In Bayview Hills, many homes are partially covered by blue plastic.Resident Meredith Morgan pointed to one home, saying the residents had to move out. She said there is mold growing everywhere in some places. "There's been lots of water coming into the house. There's cracks in the walls. The house has been condemned by the county," she said.In one rental community, some families had to move because the damage was so extensive. Seven families remain displaced.Gary Luckett's restaurant, Traders, will not reopen in time for the Fourth of July, the busiest time of year."Disappointing for everyone," Luckett said. "Everyone -- employees, local customers, out-of-town customers. It's a big tourist time of year as well." The storm peeled off the restaurant's tin roof and left it to dangle on a set of power lines. No one inside was hurt, but four highway workers were injured when the roof struck them. One is still in serious condition.Owners said they hope to reopen in August, News4's Chris Gordon reported. Sixty employees have been out of work since the storms.
A half million dollars in damage has occurred since the tornado, Gordon reported. Afternoon thunderstorms have created more water damage, blown away tarps at work sites and slowed repairs. The community said it is rebuilding and expects people to turn out to boat, wish and swim over the holiday weekend."With the price of gas, hopefully people are going to stay and enjoy all of southern Maryland, especially here in Chesapeake and North Beach," said Chesapeake Beach Mayor Gerald Donovan.A fireworks display will kick off the holiday celebration on Thursday night, one day early.
