BOWIE, Md. -- The Medical Examiner's Office said a woman found dead on Tuesday after a fire at a home in Bowie died of a gunshot wound.Vilma Artis Butler, 46, was found dead in a second-floor bedroom, police said.At about 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, neighbors called 911 to report a house fire in the 15300 block of Jenkins Ridge Road. Firefighters found the second floor of the house engulfed in flames.
After more than an hour, the fire was extinguished, Butler's body was discovered.Police suspected foul play immediately, News4's Jackie Bensen reported. A neighbor told Bensen that he heard popping sounds in the area of the victim's home about an hour before the fire.The fire started in the garage and spread to the house, officials said. It caused an estimated $300,000 in damages.Prince George's County police ask anyone with information to call the department's homicide unit at 301-772-4925.
