Police Revoke Fenty's Invitation To Speak At Memorial Service

Police Order Criticizes Fenty's Handling Of Teen's Shooting Death

Police revoked D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty's invitation to speak at a police memorial service on Friday, Tom Sherwood reported First On 4.

The Fraternal Order of Police revoked the mayor's invitation to the 29th annual service to honor fallen officers in what some are calling a show of anger and disappointment.

The group said the mayor hurt the morale of many officers by paying for the funeral last fall of 14-year-old Dante Rawlings, who was shot and killed by officers in September 2007 at the Condon Terrace apartment complex.

"The fact of the matter is, these officers are offended by that because this guy tried to kill one of our members," said Officer Marcello Muzzatti, president of FOP.

Officers James Haskel and Anthony Clay were cleared of any wrongdoing this month following a federal investigation that lasted more than seven months.

Fenty attended the solemn service with Police Chief Cathy Lanier, but he was not included in the program.

"I thought this was a tremendous ceremony," Fenty said. "I thought that the grace, the professionalism and the dignity of this ceremony as put on was a real tribute."

After the service, Fenty refused to answer questions and quickly departed.

Officers waited until after the service to comment on the mayor, saying they want to meet with him to discuss the Rawlings case.

"I think we're looking for a dialogue. I think the apology can made, but I think we're looking for a dialogue where things like this won't happen again," said Muzzatti.

The mayor's office said the mayor made no value judgment in helping the Rawlings family.

"He was a young, inexperienced mayor. He probably got bad advice on how to handle it," said Lou Cannon, FOP board member. "He has never apologized for what he's done. It is a fact that caused great harm and hurt the morale of many officers."
