STERLING, Va. -- A mother and son from Sterling were charged Tuesday with stealing more than $8,000 in merchandise from Home Depot.Sheriff's deputies said Victor A. Martinez, 20, used his job as a part-time cashier at the store on Cranstron Street to help his mother steal items, including flooring, doors, windows and bathroom fixtures.Investigators said Martinez's mother, Reina Martinez, 42, would bring items to the register, and her son would neglect to scan the items or scan them and void the purchases.
Several stolen items, some of which had already been installed, were recovered at the family home, the sheriff's office said.The alleged thefts are thought to have taken place between April 22 and May 5.Victor Martinez was charged with eight counts of embezzlement and five counts of conspiracy to commit a felony. Reina Martinez was charged with five counts of grand larceny, three counts of petit larceny and five counts of conspiracy to commit a felony.Victor Martinez remains held on a $5,000 bond at the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Adult Detention Center. His mother was released on a $5,000 bond.
