Man Shot As D.C. Leaders Hold Press Conference On Violence

UPDATED: 6:36 pm EDT April 28, 2008

A man was shot Monday afternoon just as D.C. leaders were wrapping up a news conference on efforts to curb rapidly escalating violence in parts of the District.

Police responded at about 4 p.m. to Alabama Avenue and Randall Place in Southeast, where a man was shot in the arm.

Mayor Adrian Fenty and Police Chief Cathy Lanier were concluding a conference at police headquarters in Northeast.

"Violent crime is occurring in small pockets, and we really need to be aggressive about addressing those small pockets where the violent crime is going on, really, a small number of people that are responsible for a large number of crimes," Lanier said.

A series of shootings that began at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday left four people dead and 12 wounded, including Monday's incident.

One shooting may be connected to an ongoing feud in the Fifth Police District, News4's Jackie Bensen reported.

As of Friday, seven people have been killed in two weeks in the Fifth District. There have been 50 slayings in the District so far this year.

In response to the violence, about 1,200 officers were deployed Saturday night and Sunday morning, three times the normal amount.

"Citywide, we still have a 3 percent reduction in violent crime, but that means nothing if you live in one of the neighborhoods where the violent crime is occurring, so that's the approach we're taking in deploying our extra resources," Lanier said.

A community meeting is being held Monday at 7 p.m. the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center at 1100 Michigan Avenue in Northeast to discuss violence in the Fifth Police District.

D.C. police offer rewards up to $25,000 for information that leads to arrest and conviction in any homicide case. Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call police at 202-727-9099 or 1-888-919-2746.
