FAIRFAX, Va. -- Police in Fairfax County said they are combating an increase in graffiti in the Falls Church area.Taggers are vandals that spray paint their names, and many of them are going online to share videos of their work and gain more notoriety. In the Falls Church area, tags with the name Equip are easy to find. According to court documents, last week police interviewed a suspect who claimed to be Equip, who led them to another tagging suspect, who they believe uses the names Lost and Kost, tags that also are plentiful in the area. Police searched that suspect's home and seized spray paint, a computer and a digital camera, according to court documents.
"Our department has many different ways of investigating crimes, including the graffiti," said Fairfax County police Officer Tawny Wright. "We have a lot of high technology. They use the Internet."Wright said the investigation into the vandalism is ongoing. She said homeowners and business owners victimized by tagging should act fast."They should file a report with the police," Wright said. "As soon as the report's been taken, they should go ahead and clean up the graffiti, hopefully to deter them from coming back."Police said they do not believe the taggers in the Falls Church area are associated with any gang activity. They said it appears they're tagging just for the sake of tagging.
