WASHINGTON -- More trouble for Howard University Hospital. The institution is now is facing a $4 million lawsuit.
A nurse hired to correct problems in the hospital's ER has filed a suit claiming she and other ER nurses were forced to deal with unwanted sexual advances from the head doctor of the emergency room.Meanwhile, she claims that improvements in care are still lacking. After New York Times reporter David Rosenbaum died while waiting for care in the Howard University Hospital emergency room, the DC inspector general determined there was massive mismanagement in the ER. The hospital made drastic changes. The high-profile case led to numerous firings and hirings. The man hired to supervise ER doctors was 40-year-old Dr. Geoffrey Mount Varner; the woman hired to whip the emergency room nursing staff into shape was 52-year-old Evelyn White.
Watch The Report "I was trying to set a standard of excellence," said White. From March of 2007 until October of 2007, Evelyn says that she was making extreme changes in the way Howard University Hospital did business in the emergency room. Proof of her good work is in her annual report done by her supervisors where they gave her an excellent in almost every category she was reviewed in, News4's Tracee Wilkins reported."You should expect nothing less than service excellence when you appear at Howard, however, I am concerned about that now," said White.Six months ago, White's work hit a snag. She filed an internal complaint alleging that Dr. Mount Varner was sexually harassing her. She says there was no response from the hospital. Now she's filing a $4 million sexual harassment lawsuit against the hospital and Mount Varner."Instead of being able to address the patient care issues for which she was hired, she was fending off these advances," said White's attorney, Lisa Banks.According to the lawsuit filed last week in DC Superior Court, Mount Varner often referred to himself as a pimp while calling White and the rest of the emergency room nurses derogatory terms.According to White's attorneys, this is the copy of a card sent with flowers from Mount Varner to White congratulating her on her good work. It's initialed BD. White's attorneys say that's short for big daddy, the name he allegedly insisted the ER nurses call him."Inappropriate touching, vulgar comments, lewd comments and she wasn't the only one. There were other women in the same department who were suffering the same conduct, the same harassment, by the same doctor," said Banks.White's attorneys say they have at least 12 witnesses willing to corroborate White's accusations.Howard University Hospital released this statement saying, "The policy of Howard University Hospital is to thoroughly investigate all complaints ... Given the nature of the allegations made by Ms. White, an outside legal firm was hired to conduct an independent investigation."Mount Varner's attorney released a statement saying her client, "vehemently denies the allegations and is in the process of filing a response to (Ms. White's) complaint with the court."In the meantime, White says she was demoted and is now on requested administrative leave as the accused doctor continues to work in the ER."I have never experienced anything like this before. It's as if someone has placed a hole in my heart and I'm supposed to go on and function because I do believe in the power of nursing," said White.White's attorneys say their client requested paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation thinking it would take about a month for the hospital to settle her dispute.Six months later she says she is still waiting for a response from the hospital. Hospital spokesmen say their investigation is ongoing.
