Man Convicted In Gang-Initiation Slaying

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -- A 19-year-old man from Hyattsville has been convicted of first-degree murder and use of a handgun in the shooting death of another man, Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn F. Ivey announced Wednesday.On July 14, 2007, Riverdale Park police responded to gunshots officers heard on Riverdale Road in Riverdale. Officers found 19-year-old Francisco Quintanilla in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.The investigation developed an eye witness who provided a good description of 19-year-old Mario Rodriguez-Gutierrez, police said. Investigators said they learned Rodriguez-Gutierrez was involved in an MS-13 gang initiation and the shooting was part of the process.
"Gang violence in Prince George's County and in the metropolitan area continues to victimize innocent citizens and those involved in gang activity by choice or by force," Ivey said. "But as law enforcement officials, we will continue to wage war in the courtrooms and in the communities against crime of any kind, including gang warfare, gang initiation and gang victimization."Authorities said Quintanilla was an innocent bystander not known to be involved with gangs.Rodriguez-Gutierrez is facing a possible sentence of life in prison. Sentencing was scheduled fro May 29.
