Metro Gets Ready For Nats' First Weekday Home Game

POSTED: 4:34 pm EDT April 3, 2008
UPDATED: 6:00 pm EDT April 3, 2008

On Monday a crush of people will ride Metro to Nationals Park when the team plays its first weekday home game.

The game starts at 7:10 p.m., which means fans will be fighting with commuters and tourists for space on the trains.

Metro officials have been gearing up for Monday's game since reviewing their performance on opening night last Sunday. They reported no major glitches, but said they learned some valuable lessons.

More trash bins are needed for fans leaving the game with food and drinks.

Fans with fare cards mistakenly lined up at SmarTrip gates, creating some delays, officials said.

Officials also said platforms could be used more efficiently to fit more passengers on trains.

On opening night, crowds congregated around the escalators and they didn't move down far enough on the platform, so many trains left the station not completely full.

"We're going to be out there on Monday evening reminding customers on the platforms to please spread out and use every single car on that train so we can fill it up, get that train out and then bring the next train in," said Steven Taubenkibel, Metro spokesman.

More Metro workers and transit police will be on hand Monday to monitor crowds and guide riders, not only at the Navy Yard station, but also at L'Enfant Plaza and Gallery Place/Chinatown, which are expected to see the most traffic. Extra trains also will run after the game.

"If you think about the vast majority of the Nats fans using the Green Line, even with eight-car trains, it's going to be pretty packed in there," said commuter Sean White.

Officials also said the New Jersey Avenue entrance to the Navy Yard station is less crowded than the main entrance.

Some commuters said the crowds come every spring for baseball and the cherry blossoms, and they shouldn't be caught off-guard on Monday.

"It's just one time where you have to kind of plan ahead," said commuter Jennifer Tallman.
