Zoo Asks Public To Help Name Baby Kiwi Chick

It's A Boy, Officials Say

Zoo officials are inviting the public to help name a baby kiwi chick that hatched on March 7.

The public can vote online for one of three Maori names for the North Island brown kiwi chick, which is a boy.

The Maori are the native people of New Zealand. The North Island brown species of kiwi is the country's national bird.

The possible names are:
  • Koa (KHO ah): happy, jubilant
  • Titi (TEE tee): ray of light
  • Hiwa (HEE wah): cheerful, alert

Zoo officials said the names reflect the chick's lively demeanor. He tried to walk on his first day and refused to keep still while keepers tried to weigh him.

It is the third chick to hatch in the zoo’s history.

Voting goes until April 22. People can read updates about the chick and watch it online on the zoo's Web site.
