UPDATED: 4:24 pm EST March 6, 2008

Howard County police have charged the driver of a car that struck and killed a law enforcement officer in June.

Stephanie Latoya Grissom, 25, of the 5600 block of High Tor Hill in Columbia, was issued traffic citations Thursday for negligent driving and speeding, each of which carries a fine of up to $500.

Cpl. Scott Wheeler was conducting a speed enforcement detail on June 16 when he tried to stop Grissom's 2007 Nissan Sentra, which was speeding, police said.

Grissom struck Wheeler, who was flown to University of Maryland-Shock Trauma and died two days later, police said.

A grand jury decided on Wednesday not to indict Grissom on a charge of manslaughter by automobile.

"While we were disappointed by the grand jury's decision, our police family will move forward," said Police Chief William J. McMahon in a statement.
