SILVER SPRING, Md. -- Montgomery County police said several pit bulls had to be put down after they apparently had been trained to fight at a Silver Spring home. After midnight on Feb. 27, police stopped a vehicle at Route 355 and Shady Grove Road for speeding and suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Maurice Tyrone Collier Jr., 29, was arrested on a charge of DUI, and police said a search of his vehicle led to the discovery of two loaded handguns and controlled substances.
That arrest led to an investigation by the police department's firearms task force and drug enforcement unit. Later that day, a search warrant was executed at Collier's home in the 3900 block of Ilford Drive. Authorities seized handguns, shotguns, ammunition, drugs and six pit bulls believed to be trained for fighting.According to court documents, police found a white pit bull with scars on its neck and ears, a black pit bull with scars on its face, mouth, legs and ears, and another dog with bite wounds on its face, neck and legs.Police said equipment for training dogs to fight, syringes and veterinary pharmaceuticals were found at the home. They said they also found a rabbit believed to be used for pit bull agility training.
The home had a treadmill allegedly used to exercise the dogs, News4's Pat Collins reported. The dogs were taken to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter, which has a national reputation for evaluating and placing pit bulls for adoption, Collins reported. Because the dogs were so violent, they had to be put down.Collier is facing several animal cruelty, drug and weapons charges, police said. He is being held on $105,000 bond.Stay with News4 and nbc4.com for more information.
