COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- More than 30 people are on antibiotics after a single case of meningitis at the University of Maryland. The Diamondback student newspaper reported that a freshman has been hospitalized with the disease. University Health Center Director Sacared Bodison told The Diamondback that the student is "recovering nicely."As a precaution, health officials gave antibiotics to those who might have had contact with him.
Officials don't know what kind of meningitis the student has, but they said the disease has been contained. The most serious form of meningitis is caused by a bacterial infection, and it can be fatal.Members of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity alerted health authorities of the freshman pledge's condition, and the student was hospitalized on Friday.Meningitis is usually an infection of the fluid of a person's spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain. It can be spread through spit sharing.
