Leaders Meet To Address Gang Violence In Shaw Area

UPDATED: 9:43 pm EST February 25, 2008

Peacemakers are trying to put a stop to gang violence in the District following a drive-by shooting and a retaliatory strike over the weekend.

There have been no slayings so far this year in the Shaw neighborhood, but there have been a lot of shootings, News4's Pat Collins reported.

Gang violence has occurred despite heavy police presence and crime cameras.

Since the first of the year:

  • Two men were shot and wounded on Seventh Street between M and N streets.
  • Multiple shots were fired in the alley in the 1700 block of Seventh Street.
  • Thirty shots were fired behind the historic Shiloh Baptist Church.
  • A man was shot and wounded as he was entering an apartment at 1330 Seventh Street, and an innocent bystander was hit.
  • Four teenagers were shot and wounded at a bus stop at Seventh and N streets near an elementary school.

On Saturday at Ninth and R streets, as many as 30 shots were fired at a white Cadillac. No one was hurt.

An emergency meeting was held at the Scripture Cathedral on Monday to discuss the wave of gang violence.

"They're fighting over almost anything at this particular point," said Tyrone Parker with the Alliance of Concerned Men. "They're fighting simply for a sense of direction. They're fighting just to be a part of something. They're fighting so people will be concerned about them."

"All these groups come together, sit down, come up with a solution and then take it to the streets," said Bishop C.L. Long of Scripture Cathedral.

"This shouldn't be happening, and I'm outraged about it. That's what I said to the group here today," said D.C. Council member Jack Evans, who represents Ward 2. "The violence must stop. And what are we going to do about it right now so we don't have an incident tomorrow? And what are we going to do about it tomorrow so we don't have an incident the next day?"

Leaders hope another truce can be brokered between rival Shaw gangs.
