WASHINGTON -- Gov. Timothy Kaine will meet with U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters to discuss funding for the long-awaited extension of Metro to Dulles International Airport.Virginia officials began scrambling to find a way to save the project after federal officials last week called it too risky to fund.
Without $900 million in federal funding, the entire $5 billion project to extend the rail system could collapse. More than $140 million in state and federal funds has already been spent.Kaine has been assured no final decision on funding will be made until after his meeting with Peters, sources told News4's Julie Carey.Kaine has been able to speak with the project contractor and has been told the project's price will be fixed for the next 30 days, giving officials more time for negotiations, Carey reported.Sen. John Warner, R-Va., has persuaded Peters to examine what state officials view as contradictions in the Federal Transit Administration's handling of the project.Meanwhile, landowners in the Tysons Corner area are urging President George W. Bush to intervene. The state could sell the Dulles Toll Road to fund the project without federal support. But Kaine said it's premature to talk about privatizing the road.
