Fire Leads To Evacuation At Union Station

WASHINGTON -- The lower level of Union Station will remain closed on Wednesday following a Tuesday fire at the facility.The fire broke out in the basement food court of the station at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, causing an evacuation and delaying the departure of several trains.Officials did not say that they expected the closure to delay any trains on Wednesday.
D.C. fire department spokesman Alan Etter said a fryer used to prepare french fries caught fire about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, filling the area with smoke.Etter said the fire caused little damage and no one was injured. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.Etter said fans were used to ventilate the station.Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero said two trains were delayed leaving Union Station because of the evacuation. Another train was held north of the station until it reopened.The Massachusettes Avenue entrance of Union Station, which was closed temporarily, reopened a little after 4:30 p.m.
