WASHINGTON -- A man was struck by a train Monday afternoon as it pulled into the Fort Totten Metrorail station headed in the direction of Branch Avenue. The incident happened at about 4:40 p.m., officials saidTrains shared the same track between West Hyattsville and Georgia Avenue for about an hour, officials said, but both tracks are now in use. Delays on the Green Line were expected to continue until 6:30 p.m.
Passengers stayed on the train until the man was moved and the train was able to pull into the station.Shuttle buses were requested to help passengers get around the incident, officials said.Officials cautioned that the wait for the free shuttles buses was likely to be long because a bus can only carry up to 60 passengers and a six-car train can carry about 800 passengers.Customers who could do so were asked to use the Red Line to get around the situation by transferring at the Gallery Place-Chinatown station or at the Fort Totten station. The man was struck by a six-car train. The driver of the train saw the man in the tunnel and hit the emergency button, but was not able to stop in time to avoid hitting him, a Metro official said.D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter said rescuers found the man under the train. He was treated by emergency medical personnel and was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.Authorities said the incident remains under investigation.Stay with News4 and NBC4.com for more information on this developing story.
