Two UVA Students Charged With Abduction, Extortion

TYSONS CORNER, Va. -- Police have charged two University of Virginia students in connection with the abduction of a 20-year-old man from China and extortion attempt near Tysons Corner, News4's Julie Carey reported.
Police said the plot began Nov. 20 when the victim got a call that a friend was having car trouble in the Tysons Corner area. When the victim responded, he was jumped and bound by masked men who said they were armed.According to search warrant documents, a cell phone call was made to the victim's housemate. In Chinese, the caller asked for $500,000 and said the victims would be killed if it was not received. The caller said if the roommate contacted police, the house would be blown up.The housemate called police and by tracing the cell phone traffic, they located the suspects in Room 27 at Stratford Motor Lodge at 300 W. Broad St. in Falls Church. He was bound, gagged and held in a hotel room bathroom, police said. The suspects were also in the room.The victim was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, police said.Guan Yu Lu, 19, of 1709 Jefferson Park Ave. No. 4 in Charlottesville, and Bai Chuan Shu, 19, of 583 Brandon Ave. in Charlottesville, were both transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and charged with abduction with intent to extort money. Police said the suspects, originally from China, are engineering students at the University of Virginia.Additionally, police said video surveillance footage from Tysons Corner Center shows the suspects on a shopping spree. They reportedly used the victim's credit card to buy $1,300 in new clothes.
