WASHINGTON -- Posters spreading an anti-Muslim message have been removed from the campus of George Washington University, but students are still upset. The poster, printed on standard, white 8-inches-by-11-inches paper, has a heading that reads, "Hate Muslims? So do we."
Young America's Foundation, a conservative group on the campus, is named as a contact on the poster, but leaders of the organization told the GW Hatchet that they were not involved."The fliers were very offensive, and we do not tolerate this type of hatred anywhere on our campus or within our university," said GW representative Tracy Schario. "The university's logo is posted on the flier, and that's against university policy. It is not an approved flier, so it violates our posting policy, as well as it's a violation of the use of our logo."Campus police are investigating, News4's Jackie Bensen reported.Student groups scheduled an event about the posters for 8:45 p.m. Monday. In a statement released Monday evening, school President Steven Knapp said, "There is no place for expressions of hatred on our campus. GW maintains a very strong policy prohibiting discrimination against any person on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status or sexual orientation. We do not condone, and we will not tolerate, the dissemination of fliers or other documents that vilify any religious, ethnic or racial group."Knapp said that as soon as the posters were discovered, all known copies were removed by campus police.
