UPDATED: 10:50 pm EDT October 5, 2007

Police have made an arrest in the case of a 71-year-old man slain on his front porch.

Police said Joseph Hickman was shot and killed early Wednesday outside his townhouse in the 3300 block of Ryon Court.

On Friday, detectives charged James Francis Swann, 32, of Reistertown, Md., with murder, police said.

According to a press release, police stopped a vehicle leaving the neighborhood as they were responding to the shooting. Police said Swann owned the car and was driving.

He was questioned briefly and released after detectives seized his car, police said.

Police said latent fingerprints from the car matched a box of ammunition in the woods nearby. Detectives said Swann told them Hickman was not the intended target.

Detectives said they are continuing to investigate the motive for the shooting.

Swann was charged with first-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault and use of a handgun in commission of a felony.

Swann is being held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center.
