Burglars Target Logan Circle

POSTED: 7:04 pm EDT September 10, 2007
UPDATED: 2:48 pm EDT September 11, 2007

D.C. police said they are dealing with a dramatic increase in the number of burglaries in one District neighborhood.

Logan Circle is an area that has been restored and rebuilt over the last few years. But now, burglars are targeting the neighborhood during daylight hours, police said.

Alison Cherry discovered her house had been broken into when she returned from work Friday evening. Her front door was smashed in, she said.

"The door frame was over here on the rug, and my iPod was gone, and my T.V. in that corner was gone, she said.

When she called police, she said she got some shocking news.

Police told her it was the 11th break-in report they received from the neighborhood that day. Another burglary call came in as they took Cherry's report.

Years ago, Logan circle neighbors complained about prostitutes, drugs and crime.

Things changed for the better as homes were renovated, new condos were built and prices went up.

Joseph Carver has lived in the District his whole life and is surprised by the brazen daytime burglaries.

"I could see late at night because you see people walking around homeless," he said. "It seems a little hard that seven o'clock during the day someone would be breaking into your house."

Police said they have increased their visibility around Logan Circle, and deployed undercover officers.

"Once we identified that we did have an increase in burglaries we have made several key arrests," said police Cmdr. Larry McCoy. "I think three or four burglary suspects have been arrested."

Once of those suspects told police he may be responsible for as many as 60 burglaries, McCoy said.
