WASHINGTON -- The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, also known as the South Capitol Street Bridge, in the District reopened just in time for Thursday morning's rush hour. The D.C. Department of Transportation announced earlier this week that the bridge would reopen ahead of schedule.
The reopening marked the end of the major renovation of the bridge and the lowering of the bridge's northern approach. The construction was completed ahead of the busy fall commute season, which follows Labor Day weekend. The construction company responsible for the work on the bridge will get a pay bonus for completing the work ahead of schedule, officials said. The amount of the bonus has not been disclosed. The reopening offers congestion relief to thousands of commuters who travel in and out of D.C.
