WASHINGTON -- District firefighters were called to the scene of a building fire in the 200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in Southeast before 5 a.m. Wednesday.News4's Tracee Wilkins reported that the two-alarm fire started in the back of the Capitol Lounge. A tarp covering some furniture behind the Capitol Lounge caught fire, though investigators still aren't sure why.
The lounge and the neighboring Trover Gift shop were damaged, and both are closed for now.No injuries were reported.Wilkins said that the firefighters battled the blaze on a rehab schedule, meaning they had to take breaks and drink a lot of water.Wilkins said the fire is the second one at the lounge in two years. She reported that in 2005, a fire was ignited by a cigarette left by an employee. That fire practically destroyed the facility, Wilkins reported.Eastbound Pennsylvania Avenue between Independence Avenue and Fourth Street was closed to traffic.Stay with News4 and NBC4.com as this story develops.
