Police Search For Driver

UPDATED: 11:14 pm EDT August 1, 2007

A teenager about to start his senior year at Magruder High School is dead Wednesday after a driver hit him and drove away, police said.

It occurred around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday near Gaithersburg, Md. in the town of Derwood at the intersection of Redland Road and Muncaster Mill Road.

When paramedics arrived at the apparent hit-and-run accident, "E-Sigh" Lopez was fighting for his life.

Paramedics called for an air ambulance to transport the critically injured teen to a nearby hospital.

He was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon at the hospital.

Twenty-four hours after the incident, Montgomery County police were back on the corner where Lopez was hit. They passed out fliers describing the late model silver BMW 5 series involved in the fatal crash.

Investigators said they are looking for a male driver. Police said the BMW likely has front-end damage.

Although Lopez was not inside the cross walk, police said the driver still faces a felony charge for not stopping.

Described as popular student, "E-Sigh" leaves behind his parents, an older brother and many friends who are still learning of the crash.
