Boy, 10, Killed By Soccer Goalpost

Police: Goal Toppled Over On Boy

POSTED: 3:56 pm EDT May 8, 2007
UPDATED: 9:53 pm EDT May 9, 2007

A young soccer player died during a scrimmage Monday evening in Winchester.

Investigators said 10-year-old Hayden Barnes Ellias was playing goalkeeper for the Winchester United under-11 team. They said he was positioned in the goal on a Millbrook High School soccer field. Coaches said action was taking place on the other side of the field when they heard a loud crash.

Police said the goal toppled over on Hayden Barnes, killing him. They are investigating how the incident happened. Everyone who was at the field will be interviewed.

"At this point we're unsure of exactly what happened," said Steve Edwards of Frederick County Public Schools. "Frederick County Sheriff's Department is doing an investigation. The only thing we can say with any certainty is that it was a terrible, tragic accident."

Hayden Barnes' father was at the field. He is a nurse and attempted CPR on his son, News4's Michael Flynn reported.

Blunt-force trauma to the head and neck were ruled the cause of death.

School officials said the independent soccer league -- a partnership between Frederick County Public Schools and the park system -- used school equipment. Officials could not specifically identify which goal was involved in the accident.

"The goals are portable, the goals that they were using last night, and they were owned by the Frederick County schools, but in terms of how they were secured and so on and so forth, I don't have any information on that," Edwards said.

The boy's mother told News4 that the accident was nobody's fault and she doesn't blame anyone.

"When you looked in his eyes, and you look at a kid's eyes when they really love something, and they just lit up when you talked soccer, when you played soccer, anything to do with soccer," said Jim Carden, who runs the team. "He also was a good student, but that seemed to be his passion."

A crisis team of counselors has been dispatched to the victim's school, Bass-Hoover Elementary, where Principal Gay Yowell issued this statement: "All of us in the Bass-Hoover family are saddened by the loss of one of our students. He was a valued member of our school family and will be missed."

Services for Hayden Barnes will be held Thursday and Friday. A memorial fund for the boy has been created. Send donations to:
