WASHINGTON -- The Awakening statue has spent almost three decades at Hains Point, but in the coming months, crews will dig it up and move it.The famous D.C. landmark went into the ground in 1980, but it always had a temporary permit, which expired long ago.
When it went up for sale, Milt Peterson bought the statue under a confidentiality agreement from the Sculpture Foundation for $750,000. It will anchor the main promenade at Prince George's County's National Harbor project. That means the awakening giant will at least stay on the Potomac. The D.C. residents News4's James Adams spoke with were not pleased with the move. The Awakening will take its place among three other statues honoring Benjamin Banneker, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
