Local Events Commemorate Va. Tech Shooting Victims

Several events are scheduled to commemorate those who died in Monday's shootings at Virginia Tech.



  • There will be an Memorial Mass in remembrance on Friday, April 20 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, 5222 Sideburn Road, Fairfax Station, Va., where victim Mary Read was a member. All are welcome.
  • A memorial ceremony sponsored by the Fairfax County school system is planned for Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Robinson Secondary School Field House in Fairfax.
  • The Catholic Diocese of Arlington is holding a series of prayer vigils and events throughout the week. For a full listing of events, click here.
  • Virginia Tech family members all over the country have declared Friday an "Orange and Maroon Effect" day. They invite everyone in the country to wear orange and maroon to support the school, community and family members of the victims.
  • A gathering for Emily Jane Hilscher will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rappahannock County High School at 12576 Lee Highway, Washington, Va. Donations in her name can be made to the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League, P.O. Box 396, Amissville, Va., 20106 (540-937-3283).
  • At the Catholic University of America, a seven-hour prayer service was held on Monday. The university also established a tribute wall with the intent of sending all messages left on it to Virginia Tech University. For a full listing of events, click here.
  • At Trinity University a book of intentions was established in the Well of Main Hall. Sunday's 8:30 mass in Kerby Chapel will be dedicated to the memory of the victims.
