GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- The lesson plans are under way, but what's being taught inside some Montgomery County public classrooms isn't just controversial -- the curriculum faces a legal battle. This week, health teachers introduced a groundbreaking course of sexual orientation to eighth- and 10th-graders.
The course has become the focus of a heated debate.A vocal group of parents assembled an aggressive attack including a panel of experts, signs and slogans, a slideshow, and now a lawsuit to fight back. The pilot program is being taught in six schools. It explores homosexuality and safe sex with the teens, but parents have the option of opting their children out of the program.Richelle Meer said she helped design the curriculum. She said the classes are well attended.Approved by the county Board of Education, it appears little can be done to stop what students are now learning. But as some parents wait for a trial date to stop future lessons, they are bringing in experts including an infectious disease doctor to build their case and rally support.
