WASHINGTON -- At a pep rally Wednesday night, the Fannie Mae Foundation presented a D.C. football team with a $30,000 check to pay for the team's trip to the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Orlando, Fla.The undefeated Marshall Heights Bison is made up of boys ages 13 to 15. Their coach, Jay Ford, said they allowed only one touchdown all season. The Bison won the District championship and then went on to take the eastern regional title against a team from New Jersey last weekend.League commissioner Michael Williams of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington said the organization did not have the estimated $30,000 it would take to transport 28 players and their coaches to Florida, house them, and feed them for four days if they continue to win there.
After their story aired on News4 Monday night, donors called offering small and large amounts to help the team, and late Tuesday morning, the foundation called and offered to underwrite the trip."Just goes to show you that how big a heart this community has during these tough times, holiday times, and money being tight and the like, that these small donors, as well as this major donor, was able to come forward and make the contribution so these young men can have the lifetime experience and go to Disney to compete for a national championship," Williams said.If the team keeps winning, the final game will be featured on national television.
