JuMMP Kids To Run Victory Lap At National Marathon

POSTED: 4:33 pm EDT March 26, 2008
UPDATED: 5:25 pm EDT March 26, 2008

The participants in the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation's 2008 Junior Monumental Milers Program (JuMMP) will complete their training at the SunTrust National Marathon Saturday morning.

The 348 children who registered for JuMMP have taken on the challenge of running and walking 26 miles in 17 weeks. Organizers of the SunTrust National Marathon and Half Marathon have invited the children to run a victory lap around the Runners Village in front of RFK Stadium at 7:20 a.m.

JuMMP is a physical education program that challenged children to make a daily habit of walking and running for fitness and good health. The challenge kicked off on Dec. 7 and was completed on March 14.

"I am grateful to the Greater Washington Sports Alliance and SunTrust for inviting our DPR JuMMP finishers to participate in this National Marathon," said DPR Director Clark E. Ray. "Our children have learned so many valuable lessons about discipline, commitment and perseverance by participating in JuMMP, and this is the perfect way to celebrate them for the champions that they have shown themselves to be."

The Rushmores -- the Washington Nationals' racing presidents -- will be at the marathon to greet and cheer the finishers, who will receive their finisher medals on the awards stage.
