About Meningitis

Meningitis is an infection and inflammation of the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

  • Bacterial meningitis generally occurs when bacteria from an infection in one part of the body travel through the bloodstream to the brain and spinal cord.
  • It can strike suddenly, usually with a high fever, severe headache and vomiting.
  • Symptoms may also include a stiff neck, sleepiness or sensitivity to light. It's important to get immediate medical treatment for anyone with such symptoms. Bacterial meningitis can progress quickly and can cause disability or death.
