Possible TB Scare At High School In Manassas

Health officials are investigating a possible tuberculosis case at a Manassas high school.

Authorities said a student at Osbourn High School may be infected with the contagious disease, which most often affects the lungs, but can occur anywhere in the body.

Health officials said symptoms of tuberculosis can include a cough that lasts longer than three weeks, fever, coughing up blood, chest pain, loss of appetite, night sweats and fatigue.

Tuberculosis is spread through the air from one person to another by coughs, sneezes or singing, health officials said.

Although tuberculosis is still relatively uncommon in the community, persons at highest risk of becoming infected with TB include those who share a residence or spend a lot of time with a person who has the disease.

Health experts said TB does not spread by casual contact such as kissing, sharing drinking glasses, dishes or other objects.

Students, teachers and parents at Osbourn High School have been notified of the possible infection.

The health department has not yet confirmed that the individual has tuberculosis and will screen those people who have had close contact on Monday, officials said.
