HARTFORD, Conn. -- One of the biggest disappointments a multiple sclerosis patient faces is loss of mobility. Thanks to a new technology, Mike Cummings, of Killingworth, Conn., is getting his mobility back after two decades of MS. The machine that has helped him is called the Lokomat. It is a robotic assisted treadmill and features body weight support. It suspends the person above the treadmill and has robot legs that move the legs in a very systematic way that replicates normal walking.
Dr. Albert Lo is heading a study at Mt. Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital, looking into the benefits of the Lokomat for MS patients."We want to prove that it works in a very vigorous way before we make a blanket statement that this is the greatest," he said. The Lokomat also shows promise helping people suffering from Parkinson's, traumatic brain injury and stroke.
