WASHINGTON -- Tired of the same ol' hot-dog vendor? Well, there's a new kid in town, and he's going green. This new vendor is called "On The Fly" and is offering fast food in an eco-friendly package."We hope to raise the bar for food on the street and set an example," said Gabe Klein, one of the creators of "On The Fly."
Klein used to work for Zipcar, the sustainable car sharing company. He decided to take that sustainability to street food. "We merged an electric car with vending and high quality food," Klein said.Their motto is "Fresh, Local and Fun." The food is local, the drinks are local, and the coffee roaster gives part of its profits to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.Even the packaging that the food comes in is biodegradable. The plastic bags are made of cornstarch. Pour hot water on it and it dissolves. But the owners say the emphasis is on taste."I think environmentally friendly is crucial to our mission," said Klein. "But if the food is not good, it doesn't matter at the end of the day."On The Fly's first cart at 8th and H street in Gallery Place serves Mexican. The tacos are made by Chef Jordin Lictman from The Inn At Little Washington. Their empanadas are Julia's.Two more carts are scheduled to appear on Washington streets in the next month. They will serve Asian Fusion and barbecue. On The Fly hopes to expand to 18 carts by next year. The company doesn't expect to stop global warming with a few electric carts. But the owners are hoping to show that an eco-business can be fresh, local and fun, and people will come.More Information:
